Here’s what makes ODU’s Institute for Learning in Retirement unique:

  • Sponsored by Old Dominion University, our ILR is led by its own elected board and officers and a university coordinator.
  • Lecturers are invited from the academic world to speak on their specialized subjects, as are other knowledgeable instructors and peer presenters.
  • The curriculum is varied; you choose the programs you wish to attend. Each Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer term a schedule announces the classes and activities and briefly describes the presenters. During the course of the year you will find classes offered such as the arts, social issues, science and technology, history and world affairs, health-related subjects, and the Great Decisions, Great Books and the ILR Book Group.
  • Members become as actively involved as they wish -- sharing knowledge and participating in dialogues and seminars.
  • Socializing is an important aspect of ILR. Field trips, luncheons, and trips to museums and other places of interest are offered.
